Trailing Seminars

High Country K-9 offers two types of trailing seminars:

  • Standard: 3 days, two primary instructors + HC assistant instructors, limited to 10-14 teams. Unlimited observers.

  • Comprehensive: 3 days, one primary instructor. Class limited to 4 dog teams.

Standard Seminars:

High Country trailing seminars are conducted in a unique way. Our Power Point Presentation illustrates the importance of a correct foundation for a trailing dog. This is combined with hands-on training in the field, representing the majority of the course. All components of trailing are broken down into specific exercises, such as line handling, PLS, scent discrimination, teaching the dog to commit to the trail, etc. These components are then put together to form a complete foundation. This approach allows us to see where the training issues are with each dog team, work on those issues, and then put it all together in trailing. These seminars are very focused and intense.  You’ll go home with new ideas and methods to continue your training.

Beginners: These seminars are for teams just starting out in trailing and want to train with the correct foundation right from the beginning. It is also for teams that are having a lot of training issues and want to back up in their training.

Intermediate to Advanced: These seminars are for teams that already have a good trailing foundation and have a dog that is trailing reliably either certified or ready to certify. These seminars are totally focused on field work. Each team is video-taped as they work. By the end of the day the group views, discusses and critiques the videos.

Comprehensive Seminar:

With a very low instructor/student ratio and the assistance of High Country assistant instructors, teams receive exceptional personal attention. These seminars are geared toward individual training issues. There will be scenario problems, promoting team work and thinking for real world situations. Students are video-taped as they work. The tapes are reviewed and discussed by the group. If you choose to attend one of these seminars, be prepared to work, as you will be working your dog all day long, or until you decide you’ve had enough. Great seminars for any level dog team.
