Wilderness Seminar Testimonials

I recently attended Cris Goodhue’s semi-private Air Scent seminar. It was by far the most superior seminar I have been to. Instead of the usual 1-3 problems per day of most seminars, each dog worked from 3 to 12 problems every day, depending on the length of the exercise. The problems were geared for each individual dog, not assembly-line problems like some seminars.  We had 2 instructors to 4 handlers, enabling us to get plenty of one-on-one time.  They also managed to fit in some GPS practice and a P.O.D. Problems.  We had plenty of time to discuss individual issues as well as unit issues. They video-taped the dogs so we could critique our own performance and compare performances from earlier problems to later problems.  If you want to focus on YOUR dog, yet learn from watching other teams, this is THE seminar. The weather was perfect, the scenery breathtaking, the accommodations were just right. The atmosphere was laid-back and congenial.  I look forward to attending the next seminar.

I attended the Air Scent Seminar in Prescott, Az. this October, although we have been certified in wilderness for 1 year. We had a blast working in a very extreme and different environment from the east side of the Sierra Nevada. We walked along with as many teams as we could, and as well as worked our own scenarios.  I was really pleased to have the "recall" stressed as well as obedience with distractions. It was FUN! FUN!  Very worth our time!

I'm sure I'll attend another, and encourage anyone I know struggling towards area certification to attend as well. We appreciate the experience and the willingness of Janet and Cris to develop better working teams. It's always a great weekend with the HCK9 Team.

Thank you for a truly outstanding experience participating in the Air-scent K9 Seminar in Wallowa County. Over the past several years I have attended several out-out of state SAR K9 seminars and yours was by far superior. Not only did I get four days packed with substance, but I also very much appreciated all the FUN we had. As a pragmatist that tends to react negatively to dogma, your flexible approach was very refreshing and lots of credibility was added to the process when different perspectives were presented by the two of you, not as being mutually exclusive, but simply as different ways to get to the same end. I think you conveyed professionalism and the serious nature of our business and we had a GREAT, GREAT time in spite of the snow, rain and freezing temperatures....I was glad my sleeping bag was rated for temperatures 40 below:-). I also very much appreciated the fact that you made it clear from the very beginning that feedback would be direct and that some handlers would not like what you had to say. My observation was that you gave constructive feedback and handled the hard messages that had to be conveyed to some with compassion and care, a tough balancing act.  Another aspect of your approach I particularly appreciated was the fact that the training you do is balanced and truly considers ALL the various facets that go into making a successful Air-scent K9 Team, including search strategy, navigation and dog handling.....so much training is one-sided and skewed just towards dog handling.  I was particularly excited to see how you are using MapTech Terrain Navigator as a tool to train folks in search strategy and navigation, something I have dabbled with for some time myself. The table top exercises to segment search areas and discuss search strategy were invaluable. You created a super-learning environment and I came away feeling validated, more committed than ever, and looking forward to following up on your training suggestions so I can take Bosse and me to the "next level" of SAR competency. My hat is off to you, and I am afraid you have not seen the last of me.
