Trailing Seminar Testimonials

Cris’ teaching gift and methods are beyond compare.  Selah and I came to her Spring trailing seminar as the youngest and most inexperienced team and left with a solid foundation and an insurmountable amount of information to grow and develop from.  I appreciated her ability to perceive the specific needs and abilities of my young female.  She offered guidance as to how to bring those abilities out and make trailing training fun for both of us as a team.  Cris is the standard against which I now compare every other trainer, and has made it impossible for me to take my dog to anyone else!

Dear Cris,

I have not gotten a chance to write you and thank you for a great week of training. Raven and I had great fun and learned a lot. I so appreciated all your passion and wealth of knowledge and was very impressed with you crew as well.

I felt that you were giving all of us so much more than we could have expected and especially appreciated your frank feedback. Not even the unseasonable snow could dampen our enthusiasm. ;-)

I am looking forward to seeing you again,

Sonja

The HC seminars that I have attended have been fun and full of activity. Not only do I get to work with my own dog, I have the opportunity to follow along with each team and learn from their experiences as well. Cris, Janet and the rest of the HC team are great. They patiently answer my endless questions and are willing to address the specific needs of each participant. At the end of each session I am physically and mentally worn enough to need a day of recharging, and the dog is more interested in napping than fetch!

The individual attention, honest evaluations and solutions to my training issues has been a huge help to me.  Attending seminars with HC has allowed me to improve more quickly and with fewer ‘fixes’ than I ever would have on my own.

I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great seminar experience.

Another summer has gone by and Niki and I were lucky enough to make it to two seminars with High Country K-9 this year.

The first seminar was close to Elliston, MT at the Sunshine Camp.  We did trailing and cadaver.  There were numerous instructors and trail layers to help each dog team with their individual needs.  If you had a problem they helped you work it out.  We worked on aged trails, blind starts, contaminated trails and GPS trails. For those of us that wanted cadaver, we were able to work on it. The crew at High Country, give you a good foundation to take home and build on with your dog.  I would recommend them to anyone wanting to train their dog in search and rescue to attend their seminars.  We had great food and accommodations.

The second seminar we attended was at Cris and Bob’s home in Avon MT.  We were made to feel at home there and were fed really well.  This seminar was on Trailing and Cadaver also, since that is what the teams wanted to work on.  Janet and most of the High Country K-9 were there at Cris’s when we showed up, so we were able to work with most of them, since Cris had cut the dog teams down to 6.  We worked up in the mountains and in urban through the first of the week and then we worked at Cris’s place the end of the week.  By Thursday we were down to 4 dog teams and Cris as our instructor.  Some instructors, dog teams and trail layers, had to go back to work and one dog team was injured, (we missed you Michele).  We set trails for each other, so were rewarded by being the subject the dogs found, and were able to watch them work.  We helped each other with problems with Cris’s guidance and became 4 teams in a unit.

Cris and Bob thanks for the hospitality and sharing your home. (Bob you make one scrumptious steak.)  By attending your seminars you have given me lifetime friends.

THANK YOU!!!

We came to the seminar having never done on-lead trailing and were unsure what to expect. We received invaluable individual attention from the instructors in the field and they were always available for questions. As beginners, we came away with a solid foundation and enough practical knowledge as handlers to continue to build upon this foundation at home.  It was amazing to see our dog work, we could see in his eyes that he wanted to learn, and by the end of the seminar, he had greatly improved. We are looking forward to the next seminar.'

I came to the seminar having very little knowledge and unsure what to expect.  I received individual attention from the instructors in the field.  My dog, being shy, was handled by all instructors with very special care.  After the 2nd day she showed some confidence, and I was amazed to see my dog work. I learned how to read my dog when trailing.  I surely left the seminar with a better understanding and good foundation to keep training at home.Thank you Cris and to all staff members for this great experience.  I look forward to the next seminar.

Jackie and I attended a Trailing/Cadaver Seminar near Elliston, Montana that was put on by High Country K-9.  We had very little exposure to these disciplines and had no idea how far we would get. The truth is, if you had told me that we were going to get as far as we did, I would have said you were crazy!!!

Cris and her crew gave each team the individual attention they wanted and needed. Each days training was tailored to the individual needs of that team. Jackie is a Border Collie and our issues were different from the other teams. Cris made sure that our specific issues and needs were addressed.  At the end of the 3rd full day of work, Jackie was successfully completing blind start, unmarked GPS tracks and we have the print outs to prove it!!!

We stayed in a camp up in the mountains above Elliston, about 3 miles from the top of the mountain where we worked. The food and accommodations were excellent.  The working area could not have been better suited or more beautiful.  It began to rain/snow at the end of the second day and continued for the entire third day.  We stopped long enough to put on our wet weather gear and continued without missing a beat. Cris must have thought it slowed us down because the weather cleared for the fourth day and we were up and gone by 8:00 am.  We returned to camp at 8:15 pm, over 12 hours later!!!!

It’s hard to explain what it’s like to attend one of their seminars.  It was like they had known us forever. The way they delivered the information so that it could be applied was incredible. The foundation we received was unbelievable.  Given the opportunity, I would jump at the chance to work with this group again.

Thanks to Cris, Kris (AKA Brockie), Sarah, Sam, Dave, Ann and Britney of High Country K-9.  If you are serious about training a Search K9, sign up for one of their seminars.  I’ll see you there!!!

Just got back from a 3 day seminar with High Country K9's. Thanks to Cris Goodhue, Janet Wilts and Lee and Roxanne Dunn for a really packed full seminar on trailing - line handling and scent discrimination. Most seminars I've been to the main complaint is you don't seem to really work your dog as much as you'd like, this one was so work your dog oriented they wore us out. It was great, always one-on-one attention with the instructors and ending with a search scenario on Sunday that we all took turns leapfrogging the dogs on the track so we all again got to work our dogs 2 or 3 times within the scenario. Great learning experience and as always met some really great
people and dogs. Thanks, you guys are awesome.

My husband Dave and I also had the opportunity to attend the seminar put on by High Country K9.

We have been to many seminars over the years and have never been to one of this quality.  There was an even balance of classroom  presentation to field work.  The presentations that were used are well worth seeing.  They used PowerPoint presentations with video clips inserted to demonstrate techniques that would be used in training.  And, some video of 'how not' to train, i.e. line handling.

These folks put a huge amount of effort into this class and it showed.  I can't believe anyone could have gone away without their brain being so full of new information.  There was also a good instructor/student ratio for better learning opportunities.

The training was held at a wonderful facility in Cody, Wyoming.  Everyone stayed at the camp and food was provided as well.  It's obvious that this type of facility promotes a better learning environment and also a chance to build better relationships with fellow dog handlers.

I believe this is the first of many seminars that they plan to produce.  I can't wait to go to the next one.

A big THANK YOU to Cris, Janet, Rox and Lee for a wonderful training opportunity and the chance get some great training video.

A rousing "Thank You!" to Cris Goodhue and Janet Wilts, as well as their able assistants Twila, Ron, Beat, and Monica (and don't forget Pachan and Mahko!). The High Country K9 team provided a weekend on intense learning! An EXCELLENT PowerPoint presentation that is not only informative but that is as entertaining as it is educational. The presentation provided clarity to the exercises and points that were presented. And field work that was amazing in its intensity. Field exercises that reinforce the basic concepts for the handlers (just like we break down exercises into simple parts to teach or dogs!). I heard many comments on how the exercises really emphasized the point in an easy to understand way. And were fun to boot! (Way to go Rika and Eileen! Sly Dogs! Sly Dogs!!). And I never knew so much learning could be packed into a trail! Skills not only to

develop confidence and improve the training of our dogs and ourselves, but skills that help work our dogs and to take advantage of their abilities on real searches. Line handling, reading the dog, evaluating the situation, were clearly reinforced for the handlers. The scenarios were a  blast! Bringing home many points made throughout the weekend in a practical setting, and a positive and memorable manner. Each of us went home with, not only new skills to work on, but the ability to apply them. A seminar that obviously comes from the years of walking the walk in SAR boots!

Also a big "Thank you" to all the folks who attended. It is a pleasure to renew acquaintances and make new ones. Everyone was so wonderful in their support. Good humor abounded and there was no lack of laughter and good cheer. The desire to work and learn, and the positive attitude were certainly a credit to the SAR community. If you have the chance to attend a High Country K9 seminar, I most emphatically recommend them!

Thanks so much for the incredible seminar at Seaside last week.  We both learned so much.  I found that I had underestimated what my dog can do with scent as well as found out those areas we haven't been working on but should have.  The handling techniques, learning to read my dog, and individual exercises to take home to work on, made this weekend so valuable.  Your honest feedback, encouraging words, and

shared knowledge from your years of experience made this an A+ seminar.

I think Cris and Janet are both excellent trainers with a great eye for detail in viewing dogs in training.  Their ability to pick up on the tiniest detail that the handler may not see was impressive.  They are nice, friendly and helpful, easy to take instruction from  They were especially helpful to me in assessing my dog's abilities and giving me the chance to pursue them.

High Country K9's Trailing Seminars have offered Ursa and I an excellent way to refine our skills and keep us moving forward towards certification. Trailing with a SAR focus  is exactly what we want and need living in the High Sierra.  All handlers share feedback with each other, there's lots of PLS and scent discrimination work and lots of  "what's your dog doing now?".  Janet and Cris work hard to get everyone what they need (not to mention all the great HCK9 team members!). We've been to two HCK9 Trailing seminars and are looking forward to the next one!

I have attended several High Country Seminars and have not only learned and progressed in my dog handling skills, but  have met and worked with a wide variety of handlers from different states and SAR teams. All of the High Country staff are dedicated to ensuring each handler receive personal attention, have their expectations fully met, and leave with a helpful, working evaluation.

Janet and Cris' combined experience in dog training and handling, together with their great sense of humor make these seminars well worth waiting for.  I highly recommend them to anyone seeking experience and training in any aspect of Canine SAR.

This summer I had the opportunity to attend the High Country K9 Comprehensive Trailing seminar.  I had really enjoyed attending the Standard seminar, and would have had a hard time believing the intensity could be ramped up, but I was very pleasantly surprised.  I was amazed to see the advance in our progress over the 4 days.  First we honestly and clearly identified and analyzed the weaknesses with the dog, the handler, and the dog handler team.  Then worked on ways to strengthen those weaknesses, and take the lessons home and put them to work!  We ran lots of trails, not just our own but those of the other participants, so we could see other teams struggle with the same problem, or different ones, and overcome them!!!  (And the incredibly beautiful Montana scenery was a bonus!)  But it is not the number of trails run but the quality of the instruction and coaching that sets this program apart.  As well as the camaraderie of everyone participating.  High Country K9 cultivates the attitudes and professionalism we need to see in SAR, as well as encouraging the exchange of ideas for overcoming challenges was rewarding  too.   All from a perspective of people who have a vast reservoir of experience in SAR in the real world.

My dog is far more accurate in her work, my ability to handle and read her improved, and we work much better together as a team.  And darn if I don't have a FAR FAR greater appreciation of what my dog and I are capable of!!!
Don't go if you don't want to WORK and LEARN and PUSH the limits of your ability!!!
